In 1974 he took part in the Berkshire Music Center courses in Tanglewood (USA), where he won the Koussewitzky Prize for composition. In 1976 he won first prize at the Gaudeamus competition in Holland for his <em>Les soupirs de Genevi\u00e8ve<\/em> for 11 solo strings. Ten years later he went to England to study with Sulamita Aronovsky at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Then he continued his studies with Maria Tipo in Geneva Conservatoire Superieur, winning his Prix de Virtuosit\u00e9 in 1986; in the same year he obtained also his composition degree and his university degree in modern letters summa cum laude, with a thesis about Dinu Lipatti, which won a prize for musicology from Lipatti Foundation in Bucharest.
